We have not seen any cases of canine influenza at Animal Hospital of Warwick, but we are offering the vaccine for those dogs that may be at increased risk for exposure, including dogs that go to the kennel or doggie day care. If your dog has never had the vaccine before, the initial vaccine must be followed by a booster vaccine 3 weeks later, and then annual revaccination is necessary. The vaccine will not be 100% preventative in all dogs, but would be expected to lessen the severity of the infection. Symptoms of canine influenza last for 7 to 14 days and are similar to bordetella infection but usually with a high fever. Coughing may persist for several additional weeks after the infection has cleared. If you are interested in having your dog vaccinated for canine influenza, please call for an appointment
